Let's banish the black thumb title together
Quick poll. If you were teaching someone how to swim, would you throw them in the pool and walk away? If you were helping your kid learn to ride a bike, would you get rid of the training wheels and leave them to it? I’m guessing that’s a no on both points. But I hear time and again from people who say they have a black thumb and kill everything. Typically, when pressed for more details, it’s more like one or two plants, some of which were gifts, and in most cases none came with much in the way of instructions. It was a little bit like throwing someone in the water to teach them how to swim – not a sure-fire success.
Instead of giving it another go, it feels easier to say, “No, I just have a black thumb.”
It’s how we protect ourselves from disappointment.
I get it. I gave myself that designation, too. But it wasn’t because I didn’t like plants. I just assumed I was terrible at keeping them alive. When I allowed myself to give it a go again – after totally falling in love with a plant that promised winter blooms – I had far better luck than before.
The difference? Good instructions and the right type of plant. Something that wasn’t overly fussy and didn’t require a whole lot of attention.
New plan: Try a different plant!
You’ve got this!
Care for your instant garden is easy. Once a week, bring your tray to the sink and run each pot under a gentle stream of water. Place back in the tray (plastic saucers are there to protect the wood) and enjoy your windowsill garden for another maintenance-free week!
No Extra tools required
Each kit contains everything you need to get planting. There’s nothing extra to purchase. You’ll get a custom-built whitewashed wooden tray, four plants, terra cotta pots, saucers, preserved moss, scoop, organic potting mix and nitrile gloves (gloves included in cactus kit only).
